Un/Orte
Objective
In a team of two, design and structure a fictional book about Un/Orte (Non/Places). Each team member develops and photographs a series of a space assigned to them.
The assignment is based on Marc Augé’s concept of “Non/Places”, functional spaces of passage such as airports, motorways, or shopping centres that lack historical, relational, or symbolic significance. The project translates this theory into a visual and editorial form, reflecting on the experience of such environments.

Looking Back
Getting to explore how this could be communicated visually was super exciting, since there is so much that can be done within layout and print, from deliberately creating akward layouts that form spaces, making the book intentionally boring so that one wants to skip through it, or for it to leave empty spaces in bookshelves due to its awkward shape and size, or be small and portable enough so that it can fit in Non/Places like purses, backpacks and be read on a bus. And we haven’t even touched on materials, colours or fonts!?!?
